Imajuku Dolls have been designated by Fukuoka Prefecture as a Special Traditional Craft.
There's the monkey mask and Saizo Sasanos, which protect against disaster, as well as female masks; all of them are simple but have plenty of character, and continue to be loved by all.

Imajuku dolls are a type of clay folk doll that are said to have formed the foundation for Hakata dolls.
They are handmade by an artisan one by one, and are beloved for their simplicity and warm features.

There are people who started making Imajuku Dolls during the Edo Period and continue the tradition even today.
Meet the Satohs.

My father's brother was a maker of Imajuku Dolls.
It was told to me that he started a doll shop along the main street in Imajuku in 1905.
Characteristics and Appeal of Imajuku Dolls
They are used year-round for various events:
A female mask for Setsubun, Hinasama Dolls for the Girls' Festival, Warrior Dolls for the Boys' Festival, and right now monkey masks are popular.
They signify the avoidance of disasters.
From long ago, there's a doll called Saizo Sasano, which is a monkey with a staff that wards off evil.
The Japanese word for "monkey" and "ward" sound the same so the doll has been popular as a talisman to protect against disease and misfortune.

Imajuku Dolls are made from clay and then carved, taking their final shape in the form of plaster.
Clay is added to add textures.
They are left to dry under the sun for one month, before being baked in an oven.
After they come out of the oven, they are painted.
Life is breathed into them in the final step, when the brush is taken to their faces.
Imajuku Dolls have been made with the same technique since the Edo Period.

I can't continue to this by myself.
To continue making the classic dolls, to make dolls for the future, I do this with my husband.

の画像

Imajuku Dolls, which can represent the love of a parent for their child or a talisman to ward off evil, have long been a part of the hearts of the people of Fukuoka.
It can only be natural that they continue to watch over all of us.
