What exactly happened?
No one knows.
It's 2014,
and it has been almost 400 years since Shogun Kanbei's era in Fukuoka.
2014
Time traveling
over 400 years. . .
We look into the lives of men who built the foundation of today's Fukuoka
with Shogun Kuroda Kanbei, Nagamasa, and the Fukuoka Kuroda Bushotai (warriors).

Fukuoka Castle

Fukuoka Castleの画像

Right. This is Fukuoka Castle Ruins, where you once founded and resided.
As the reward for the Battle of Sekigahara,
Tokugawa Ieyasu assigned Kuroda Nagamasa as the ruler of Chikuzen.
Here, he spent 7 years building this castle from 1601.
It is believed that Kanbei suggested this very location for the castle.

Shogun Kanbei, can you tell where you are now?
The Otaka-yashiki Ruins. . .
This is where my residential quarter was.
I was only there for a little bit, but it was a nice place.

Image of Fukuoka Castle

Fukuoka Castle consisted of
the castle keep of Tenshudai, the Honmaru Palace, the Ninomaru Palace, and the Sannomaru Palace.
This gigantic fortress featured over 47 yagura turrets including the Honmaru Palace.
I never got to witness the completion of this castle. . .
You had built a magnificent fort here, Nagamasa.
Within Fukuoka City are another famous castle from this era,
Najima Castle, where they first resided,
and Terumo Shrine where both Kanbei and Nagamasa are enshrined as well.
The town of Fukuoka has truly flourished. . .
I agree, Father.

Fukuoka City Subway

Fukuoka City Subwayの画像

You came all the way from 400 years ago. . .
Why don't you enjoy more of your own town?
Your highness, watch out!
"Whoa!
What is this?"
This is called a subway, a city transportation system.
You can get around Fukuoka City very smoothly.
That's convenient.
It's an iron cage. . .
Well pleased!

Fukuoka Lord Kuroda Clan Burial Site

Leaving Fukuoka Castle, Shogun Kanbei and the pack headed to. . .
Sofuku-ji Temple, the bodaiji (family temple) of the Kuroda clan.
Along with Kanbei,
Nagamasa and other ruling lords of the region
rest in peace here.
Shogun Kanbei,
This is where you lay your head. . .
My burial ground. . .
They've placed a lofty one for me.
Your entire life has been engraved on it.
Done by a noble Buddhist monk named, Keitetsugenso,
about 400 years ago. It is truly a treasure today.
Next to my father's tomb stone is mine, isn't it?
It is such an honor to know that we have been preserved like such for well over 400 years.
Well pleased!

Fukuoka City Museum

Fukuoka City Museumの画像

The Fukuoka City Museum continues to preserve many artifacts related to the Kuroda clan.
One of the Three Great Spears of Japan, Nihongo,
was preyed by Kuroda clan vassal, Mori Tahei, from Fukushima Masanori.
It is mentioned in the folk song, Kurodasetsu.
Along with the sword awarded to Kanbei by Oda Nobunaga
and a National Treasure, Heshikirihasebe. . .
the tachi sword sent by the Hojo clan at the siege of Odawara
and another National Treasure, Nikkoichimonji, among other famous fine blades.

Hakozaki Shrine

Hakozaki Shrineの画像

Shogun Kanbei and the clan headed to Hakozaki Shrine.
Having more than 1,000 years of history, this is one of the three biggest shrines of Japan.
This is worth visiting.
After defeating Shimazu Yoshihisa,
Toyotomi Hideyoshi held his Kyushu conquest ceremony here.
Kanbei was awarded with 2/3 of Buzen territory at that time.
Nostalgic. . .
I remember working so hard then.

By the way, are you all getting hungry?
Right, we haven't had anything all day.
I've got no energy. . .
Fukuoka has lots of dishes we recommend.
I hope you try some while you are visiting these locations associated with Kanbei.
Looks delicious. . .
Your highness, this looks delicious also.
Tons of tasty treats.
Fukuoka became such a vibrant city
because of you guys who laid the foundation, Mr. Kanbei and Mr. Nagamasa.
"Well, I'm honored to hear that.
"
Indeed, Father!
Well, let's go get some gourmet food of Hakata.
Let's go!
