Intro

With his military prowess and clever strategy
Kuroda Kanbei, a legendary strategist for Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who led the eventual conquest of the nation by the great shogun.
Standing his way was Utsunomiya Shigefusa, the leader of the band of warriors ruling over Buzen.
He has never lost against Kanbei in a battle - making him his archenemy.
In this episode, we look into this Kanbei's longtime rival...
and visit Chikujyo-machi, Fukuoka Prefecture, the home base of the Utsunomiya clan.

Kiinokou Castle

Kiinokou Castleの画像

With a volunteer guide
We went into a steep mountain.

Here is the entrance of Kiinokou Castle
Giant rock, it's almost falling
Surprisingly, this is the front gate to enter the Castle

The terrain in this area is quite rocky
so it was supposed to be utilized effectively

During the Sengoku period, there were…
many castles built around the mountain of this area
like this one, Kiinokou Castle.

Utsunomiya clan is responsible for all of them.
From the early Kamakura era…
They ruled this region for about 400 years, making them the most powerful in Buzen history.

In the era of Shigefusa, they helped Hideyoshi's military campaign in Kyushu, however,
were assigned to Iyo Province and turned resentful.
Against Kanbei, who was assigned to rule Buzen instead, Shigefusa rose up in rebellion.

Please watch you step.
Onto the premises through the gate wide enough for just one…
So steep that you might have to crawl.

Are you all right?
Yes, I'm fine.

Fortifying the castle built on the precipitous cliff Kuroda forces struggled against the defending Utsunomiya clan.
In fact during war times, this castle served as a natural fortress to protect the elderly, women, and children.
It shows the benevolence and dedication to protect their own people.

So, people here call him "Kii tono sama" (My Lord Kii)
He was very considerate, and… according to the locals, one could not survive in this region if any ill-will toward "Kii tono sama" were given.
He'd been respected that much.

Tentoku-ji Temple

Tentoku-ji Templeの画像

To find out what happened to Shigefusa Utsunomiya after that, we visited the Tentoku-ji Temple.

The Kuroda's struggled against the Utsunomiya clan.
The Utsunomiya did the best to defend, but they were concerned about starvation tactics.
So, Shigefusa and Kanbei agreed to meet at the Nakatsu Castle
in hopes of coming to a settlement…
There, Shigefusa was assassinated.

This is his grave.

Shigefusa was a brave shogun…
who was brought down by a deception.
Tentoku-ji Temple, where they rest in peace
400 years later today, many locals continue to pay their respect at this site.
Apparently he was one of a special kind.

He must have been lovable; and that's his virtue toward this place.
There are many other historic sites associated with these two
in and around Chikujyo-machi, the home of Utsunomiya Shigefusa and Kanbei's longtime rival.

Kyu-Kurauchi Tei

Kyu-Kurauchi Tei の画像

Former Kurauchi Tei
and even a building like this…
How spacious!

Hello!
Welcome!
I heard this place is associated with Kuroda Kanbei.

Yes, it's the descendent of the retainer of Utsunomiya clan.
From the Meiji era to the Showa era, they ran a coal mine and, the Kurauchi family supported the modernization of Japan.

This Kurauchi family used to be the retainer of the Utsunomiya.
This is the mansion their descendents have built.

Lighting equipment with the family crest... and rooms with different transom designs.
It's built in an elaborate way…
There are so many interesting features here.

I wonder what went through their mind during the building process.
Possibly, they had the spirit of hospitality for their guests…
Perhaps hoping to show their care and inspiration.

Meseta no Mori, Chikujyo-machi Souvenir Shop

Meseta no Mori, Chikujyo-machi Souvenir Shopの画像

So, I've got some information that…
a new product was created to commemorate Utsunomiya Shigefusa.
So, I'm here at Meseta no Mori, Chikujyo-machi Souvenir Shop.
There it is!
This is it.
Geigeki Curry
Flashy design, right?
Utsunomiya Shigefusa was the biggest rival of general Kanbei,
whom in the Battle of Kiidani
even Kanbei could not defeat,
could not find a threshold.
They fought with angst.
So I named it Geigeki (or "ballistic") Curry
As in, it was a ballistic battle between the two.
We modified the curry served at the Tsuiki Airbase (Japan Air Self-Defense Force) in Chikujyo-machi and…
added ingredients to spice it up.
How spicy is it?
Let's try it.
It's great!
Isn't it?
It's just…painfully hot!
Ballistic, right?
It'll destroy you.
I think Kanbei would have to surrender after eating this.
I'd have to, for sure.

The land of Kanbei's rival, Chikujyo-machi
We walked around the region associated with him this time
We had a lot of fun with making a discovery
I didn't know there were many places
associated with Kanbei Kuroda
At the same time, associated with Utsunomiya clan
They are loved by many local people here
It was quite interesting to know the fact
Please come to Chikujyo-machi by all means!
